Gain of Function: New Mutation
2020-present
The series "Gain of Function: New Mutation" was created in response to research surrounding the intersections of military industrial complex, ecology, simulations, mutations, and futurology. The two sets of images can be viewed and enjoyed individually but are intended to be viewed together, to reinforce and enhance each other's meaning.
The narrative collages reference contemporary society, distribution of information, classism, human interactions, and attempts to understand and control the natural world around us. Analog collaged figures are created from fashion magazines and vintage National Geographic magazines. These figures are collaged into ethereal amorphous dreamlike landscapes, void of a particular time and place.
The kaleidoscope images are created by writing transcribed text which I scan into a computer and manipulate through layering and mirroring. The text I am using are words and phrases that stand out to me in podcast, audio books, and documentaries I listen to about news and culture relating to previously stated research topics. As the images evolve, they become less coherent to the point of no longer being legible. Some of these images are shared in different stages of mutation. The images reference cell reproduction, genetic mutations, breakdowns in communication, purposeful mutations of information, and misinformation campaigns.
"For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light. Turn up the lights in here baby. Extra bright, I want y'all to see this. Turn up the lights in here, baby. You know what I need. Want you to see everything. Want you to see all of the lights." Luke 8:17 / Kanye West All of the Lights

For this installation I covered the magnets with magazine cutouts. While this worked in the exhibition, and in the detail shots, these translate as clumsy in the image of the entire collage and were not used in future exhibitions of the collages.
